Ludo rules: how the game is played

Same race you played on a cardboard board. This page is the rulebook Ludo Bangla uses — Classic, Bangla, and the switches in Settings.

This is the rulebook Ludo Bangla uses. For a first game, read “The race” and “The dice”, then play. Bangla readers can use লুডু খেলার নিয়ম.

The race

Each player has four tokens of one colour: red, green, yellow or blue. Tokens start in a yard. A roll of 6 (or a 1, if you turned that house rule on) brings one token onto the start square. Tokens then move clockwise around the shared track. After a full lap they climb their own home column. A token that lands exactly on the centre is finished. First player to finish all four tokens wins. Remaining players can play for second and third.

The dice

  • On your turn you roll once, then move one token that many squares — if a legal move exists.
  • A 6, a capture, or a token reaching home usually gives another roll. Settings can turn any of those extras off.
  • Three 6s in a row can void the turn when that rule is on.
  • The default chance of a 6 is not a perfect 1-in-6. That is written on Fair play and can be changed in Settings, including a 17% option that is close to a fair die.

Captures, stars and blockades

Land on an opponent’s single token and it returns to its yard. Star squares and start squares are safe when safe-stars are on — the usual Classic setting. Two tokens of the same colour on one square can form a blockade if that rule is on; other colours cannot pass.

Classic and Bangla

Classic is the common international set: enter on 6, safe stars, blockades, extra rolls. Bangla is the Bangladeshi house-rule set used in this game — same board, different defaults for local play. You can mix the switches. There is no single government rulebook; we document ours so a room agrees before the first roll.

Teams

In Team Up, partners never capture each other. A team wins when all eight of their tokens are home. Read when to move which token after you have played a few games.
