Ludo rules for beginners

A beginner’s path through Ludo rules: entering, moving, capturing, safe squares and finishing.

If you have never finished a Ludo game, use this order. The compact rulebook is Ludo rules.

Get one token out

You cannot walk until a token is on the start square. That usually takes a 6. Spend early 6s on leaving the yard until you have two tokens out. A single token is easy to send back.

Walk the track

Each pip is one square. You must use the exact number; you cannot bounce off home. If two tokens could use the roll, pick the one that is safer or closer to a useful capture — see tips.

Landing on someone

A single opponent on your landing square goes back to their yard (unless they sit on a safe star or start, and those rules are on). You usually roll again after a capture.

Going home

After a full lap you enter only your colour’s column. You need the exact number to finish a token. Finishing all four wins.

Bangla

If your family plays “Bangla Ludo”, pick that preset so the room matches the arguments you already know. Bengali text: লুডু খেলার নিয়ম.
